The M310 OTDR was specifically designed to address the technical challenges associated with today’s enterprise network architectures. Bandwidth demand is accelerating the deployment of 40 and 100G Ethernet and these data rates are driving the need for low loss fiber links. TruEvent Technology was developed to specifically to address these needs. Our unique software can accurately report closely spaced events - allowing the user to confidently determine where losses meet or exceed specification. Network uptime is critical in enterprise networks, so being able to pinpoint problem connectors, splices or bends in the fiber and get the network back on line quickly, is crucial.
Accurate and reliable auto event analysis is needed to test and document the large number of fibers being tested in enterprise networks. Our M series OTDRs report both the traditional OTDR trace and an event table clearly showing pass/fail results. This easy to interpret table allows less skilled technicians to effectively use the OTDR.
TruEvent technology is the result of months of research and data collection on all types of networks to provide a new level of accuracy and reliability in event analysis. Taking full advantage of the unit’s short dead zone and adding improved event accuracy, this is the best performing OTDR for enterprise and data center applications. With the push of a single button, users can be confident of obtaining accurate locations and measurements of all events, without the confusing introduction of false events.
The M310 is easy to use (Touch and Test®) and comes standard with an integrated OPM, VFL and inspection capability. No surprise 'add-on' charges for these commonly needed support functions.
With dead- zones less than 1 m and dynamic ranges of up to 38 dB the M310 models are ideal for testing, troubleshooting and documenting Data Center, Enterprise, SAN/LAN/WAN, campus, Department of Transportation and military single mode and multimode fiber networks.

Built in Optical Power Meter (OPM)- Test and store both Tier 1 and Tier 2 results in one unit
Built in Visual Fault Locator (VFL) - quickly identify fiber faults and verify polarity
Front End and First Connector checks - verify launch quality to help users obtain better OTDR trace results
Live Fiber Detection - warning about being connected to a live fiber to protect equipment and prevent testing the wrong fiber
Dynamic Range - the right capability for Enterprise networks
38 dB Single-mode
30 dB Multimode
Inspection ready - plug in the DFS1 Digital FiberScope for inspecting connectors and assuring there are no dirty or damaged connections in the network
Fast, Real Time OTDR mode - use in troubleshooting or splicing applications
Truly hand-held - compact, rugged product packaging is designed for outside use and cramped inside plant environments.
M310 Touch and Test® supports users of all levels
Full Auto Mode – Connect and press test. M310 will detect fiber and set recommended test parameters. Perfect for novice technicians or repair techs quickly looking for faults on fiber spans of unknown length.
Auto-Once Mode – Designed for testing cables with multiple fibers. M310 performs a full auto test on the first fiber and retains recommended settings allowing fast testing of subsequent fibers.
Expert Mode – Provides access to testing parameters for experienced users to setup optimal testing scenarios for specific networks.
Real-Time Mode – Continuous OTDR operation and display update, allows users to dynamically change networks while monitoring OTDR trace results. Example: relaxing fiber bends to reduce attenuation loss.
M310 Touch and Test® Features
The M310 provides one-touch access to OTDR and OPM test modes and inspection mode making set up and test easy.
Set Pass/Fail thresholds compliant with TIA/ISO/user-defined values to alert test operators of failing or marginal events.
New Job creation editor with detailed job/file naming allows users to quickly create a file for storing results.
Structured file management to logically and easily store test results.
Results Manager allows in-unit review of saved test results and quick selection of previously created jobs for new test results.
A simple toggle function enables fast and logical storage of trace, loss and inspection results from both ends of a fiber/cable.
The M310 supports visual inspection per IEC 61300-3-5 visual inspection practices using AFL's DFS1 Digital FiberScope - providing the user the ability to view and document connector end-face images along with their OTDR traces and loss/power measurements.
Data Storage and Reporting Capabilities (TRMTM)
Thousands of test results may be stored internally or on the supplied USB drive. Test results are transferable, via USB cable or USB drive, to a computer for viewing, printing, and analyzing with the supplied Windows® compatible software - TRM™ 2.0 Basic Analysis and Documentation Software (Test Results Manager). Acceptance reports generated using TRM 2.0 can include OTDR traces with summary and event information with or without pass/fail indication, event maps, loss/power measurement tables and end-face images.
Advanced Analysis Software
The Advanced Analysis software option features macro/microbend detection and bi-directional trace analysis and is available for the M310 and in TRM 2.0 Advanced Analysis PC software. Macro/Microbend detection helps technicians identify installation problems. Excessive bends or stress on fibers will show up as increased attenuation at higher wavelengths. These bends or stresses are indicated on the Event Table with a special icon. Bi-directional trace analysis, used to resolve errors due to things like mis-matched fibers, takes the measurement of the loss in both directions, then calculates a two-way average of the OTDR's data, which is the true loss of the event.
